BOARDWALKS/WALKWAYS

Helical screw piles can be installed with light equipment such as skid steers, backhoes, mini-excavators, or even with portable driveheads that are not attached to a machine. Also, spoils are not created during the installation of a helical screw pile. Therefore, they are often specified for support of walkways, boardwalks, bridge abutments, or other structures in environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands, bogs, or fenns. Geotechnical Solutions has successfully installed helical screw piles for support of walkways with minimal disturbance to the environment for the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Summit County and for support of abutments for park bridges in Stark County.

ADVANTAGES OF USING HELICAL SCREW PILES FOR BOARDWALKS OR WALKWAYS:

  • Quick installation (Higher production rates)

  • Helical screw piles (excluding the "pulldown" pile or HPM) can be loaded immediately

  • Clean (No spoils to remove, light installing equipment causes minimal disturbance to wetland)

  • Quiet (Hydraulic drive equipment makes less noise than hammers that drive steel piles or timbers)

  • Predictable results (With the installation torque to capacity ratio, results can be predicted in the field without expensive load tests)

The pile material and walkway support bracket are hot-dipped galvanized for corrosion protection. However, if the environment is highly aggressive in terms of corrosion, we can double or triple the protection by installing a HPM (Helical Pulldown Micropile). This pile type, which is patented by Vickars Development and the Chance Company, has a grout column that surrounds the central pile shaft for double corrosion protection. The grout column can be cased with PVC pipe for triple corrosion protection.
